about

I Think Like Midnight is an instrumental rock band formed by lovers of the lost art of the rock instrumental. The initial spark was a reoccurring desire on the part of ITLM founder Andrew Chalfen (the Trolleyvox, the Wishniaks) to hear a new record by the band Pell Mell. As no new Pell Mell record has been released since 1997, Chalfen formed ITLM along with drummer and long-time collaborator Dean "Clean" Sabatino (Dead Milkmen) in an attempt to make a Pell Mell-esque record, which they sort of did, up in Ithaca NY at Mabel Sound, the recording studio of J. Robert Lennon. The result is the album "Warm Seclusion Structure", a record that so surprised everyone involved that Chalfen recruited bassist Joshua Newman to join in along with Sabatino on drums and Lennon on Keyboards to play live.

How do the sound shapes sound? Well, songs such as "Frictionless" and "Ground Effect Aircraft" sound very Pell Mell-like, while others take off in unexpected directions. "Triple Without" evokes Pavement covering "Strawberry Fields Forever," while "Soft Materials" finds the Edge's delayed guitar skinny dipping with a dub bass line. Yet other songs seem to channel back porch hazy afternoon vibes of Yo La Tengo and "Up on the Sun"-era Meat Puppets serenading dandelions. A recent purchaser of the record said it all sounds like a cross between The Pernice Brothers and Tortoise, a description which continues to blow minds.
